About Hannes Artens

A Welcome
Message

A breezy welcome to the website of political novelist Hannes Artens, introducing himself and his debut novel, The Writing on the Wall, to you, revered reader, from wherever you may have joined us.

I aspire The Writing on the Wall to be considered my contribution to a worldwide debate about America’s role in tomorrow’s world. I deliberately depict a worst-case scenario of a U.S. gone astray against her people’s will; and dourly bash corporate media for having neglected their duties as a fourth estate – having crawled away in voluntary self-censorship in the run up to Iraq. My novel is enriched with characters as closely mimicking real life politicians and journalists as is legally possible, and cautions against war with Iran in letters ten feet tall in order to provoke discussion...

The determining factor of my life and my greatest joy always has been debate, the exchange of ideas, beliefs, and arguments with people from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds across the world. I’m not the kind of author to hide behind his publisher, agent, or preprinted online forms to be replied to when Christmas and Easter happen to fall on the same day. On the contrary, I will measure The Writing on the Wall’s success not by sales figures but by the discussions it has triggered.

So, I not only strongly encourage but entreat you to get back to me with your take on it...

The Writing on the Wall

"A must read; I read it in a day, ... filled with basic truths, it is spot on, very well researched and very thoughtful, ... a very balanced book reaching out to all of us, with plenty of read meat for anybody of any political persuasion."
Elizabeth Blackney, author of Sex, Lies and Politricks

"A tautly narrated thriller"
Midwest Book Review

"Hannes Artens is a gifted and talented author. He writes with great insight and wisdom. The Writing On The Wall … is an in-depth book that will make you stop and think and is not a light or fluffy read. It is filled with oomph; … an interwoven tapestry of complex circumstances and insights into a future world soon to come. Listen up, the writing is on the wall."
MyShelf.com

"This fascinating novel deserves to be read and discussed ... Besides the intellectual strengths of his novel, Artens weaves an emotionally compelling story ... The Writing on the Wall is a gripping and heartfelt novel that forces the reader to face the dual realities that a war with Iran is very possible and might well be difficult if not impossible to avoid."
Lauren Johnson on TheAgonist

This election season’s clincher

Iraq was only a prelude to the horrors of an eventual war with Iran.

A coalition of aching-for-Armageddon televangelists, big oil, and false prophets of democracy manipulate maverick, straight-talking Senator-become-President- in ‘08, Jim Whitman into aerial strikes against Tehran. This is a confrontation he knows the United States must avoid by all means. Yet the spirits he has cited and pandered to on his road to the White House no longer follow his command. When the cakewalk into Iran becomes a gauntlet, the Vietnam veteran- turned-dove-by-conscience is soon decried as a reckless warmonger by the public and besieged in the West Wing by cut-and-run protesters while the American Empire stumbles over the abyss into a military quagmire, economic depression and possible nuclear war.

The Writing on the Wall is as much a no-holds-barred accounting of the last six years as a forceful premonition of what may follow. With provocative frankness and an abundance of political allusions some will find too realistic to handle, this cautionary tale exposes the forces that opened the Pandora’s Box of the Middle East. Through stirring personal fates, it guides us into the gray area where today’s frightening fiction can become the future’s bloody fact. A future we may still have the power to change...

The World in a Coffee Mug: Q & A
with Hannes

Q: No doubt, The Writing on the Wall covers a wide host of issues, from an accounting of the Iraq debacle, if you may say so, to war with Iran, global recession, the excesses of the Patriot Act, attempts to craft a new order for the Middle East, even European integration. Of all the ambitious goals and important issues you address, if you could only manage to influence one with The Writing on the Wall, what would you consider the most vital?

A: To contribute to a nation wide campaign to dissuade, or if necessary, force the current and next administration to abandon their plans and preparations for war with Iran. George Bush and Dick Cheney have repeatedly proven their complete disregard for the human costs of their bedlam madness to recast the Middle East along their beliefs and big oil’s needs. With members of their administration and the entire Republican Party giving them the cold shoulder and deserting the sinking ship, and the President confronted with the ruins of his ambitions wherever his eyes roam, they may know no bounds to vindicate their legacy. And the current Republican frontrunner, Rudy Giuliani, has hired as foreign policy advisers neocons even George Bush considered too extreme, openly advocating attacking Iran. This is madness. It is impossible to fix the nuclear quandary with aerial strikes. They will as surely provoke Iranian retaliation as night follows the day. The American public needs to be aware of the risks behind such a reckless gamble. A war ten times worse than Iraq is a given and will most likely result in a global recession of an unprecedented dimension due to the oil price shooting through the ceiling. Given these repercussions, I can’t imagine any American seriously considering such an option; but they need to know, need to see through the propaganda and demagogy...

Theory of the Cafe Central by Alfred Polgar

The Café Central is indeed a coffeehouse unlike any other coffeehouse. It is instead a worldview and one, to be sure, whose innermost essence is not to observe the world at all. Then what do you see? About that, later. So much is experientially certain, that there is nobody in the Café Central who isn't a piece of the Central...
